The Driftless Region is a land of surprises. The glaciers that shaped the majority of the state spared this region bordered by the Chippewa, Mississippi, and Wisconsin Rivers. It is a landscape of high plateaus webbed with crystal clear rivers and cut deep green valleys. The wineries of the Driftless Region offer more traditional varieties of grape wines than any other region.
Danzinger Vineyards and Winery is perched atop the Alma Bluffs overlooking the Mighty Mississippi River. The vineyard is currently 18-acres and was started in 2003 with their beautiful tasting room that opened in 2010. All the grape wines are made with their own grapes and bottled on-site. Melvin and David Danzinger loved to farm and were looking for a new venture for their retirement when someone suggested growing grapes. What started as a family venture for their retirement has grown into a passion with more than 8,000 plants.
Seven Hawks Vineyards is located just north of Fountain City. The vineyards include almost 18,000 northern hybrid vines and 500 plum and cherry trees, making them one of the largest vineyards in the upper Midwest. This 1870’s renovated gem is one of many fine old buildings in historic Fountain City. All of their wines are made from 100% locally grown grapes and fruit and we will be able to sample them in their tasting and wine rooms. Lunch will be on your own in beautiful Fountain City. The city is located on a bend in the Mississippi River, where the river flows right at the base of the bluffs on the east side of the valley. Because of this, some points in the city are only two houses wide.
Elmaro Vineyard and Winery in Trempealeau is a family affair. Mark, Lynita, Laura, Cameron and Todd all take pride in the products they produce. Their interest in growing grapes started with the love of wine, agriculture and family. Planting their first vines in the spring of 2006, they set out to not only grow the best quality grapes and produce award winning wines, but also share their experience and love of grapes with everyone that visits. They have invited us to be their guest and enjoy their great wines.
Brambleberry Winery is a small artisanal winery tucked into the beautiful rolling hills. The winery, like their award winning Country Inn, is named after the numerous blackberry bushes (called brambleberries in Scotland) that grow on their farm. Their Scottish ancestry is evident in the names of their wines and in the décor of their new tasting room. From their patio, we can watch the Scottish blackface sheep frolic, the Scottish Highland Cattle graze or the piglets run about.
