Visiting wineries is the perfect way to truly experience Wisconsin’s incredible variety of wines. Meeting the wine makers, seeing the vineyards and orchards, touring the wineries and best of all, tasting the wines! Eclectic, fun, scenic, full of history and personality, you’ll love visiting Wisconsin’s independent wineries.
Our day will begin at Maiden Rock Winery and Cidery in Stockholm. Located on the scenic bluffs above the Mississippi River at Lake Pepin. Maiden Rock Winery and Cidery is an award-winning cider orchard presenting a unique collection of premium hard ciders and wines – produced from fresh local fruit – flavored by Wisconsin. Their specialty is the production of artisanal ciders crafted from authentic cider apples, grown in one of the finest apple regions in North America. Maiden Rock Winery & Cidery is on-track to becoming the dominant craft cider producer in the Upper Midwest. The unique collection of apples, wines and craft ciders, combined with unparalleled customer service creates lasting memories and stories to share.
We will continue to Fountain City for lunch at the WingDam Saloon and Grille. Their patio allows us to enjoy our lunch and drinks outside (weather permitting) while taking in a great view of the Mississippi River.
Our next stop will be at the Tenba Ridge Winery in Blair. In 2004, John Gill opened the winery atop a ridge in Trempealeau County with 19 wines, six of which have won medals in competitions. Now with new owners, Jon and Kim Sylla and sons, production has increased to more than 20,000 bottles per year. Their big bold wines are full of flavor and are great paired with food or just by themselves. In July 2015 they started offering crafted beers. The winery’s wine terrace and deck overlooks thousands of acres of Wisconsin woods.
Not a winery but an exceptional stop is next at the Sand Creek Brewing Company in Black River Falls. This is one of the largest microbreweries in Wisconsin. The history of the original building is very interesting with tragedy after tragedy for the Ulrich Oberbolz family. He cut his brewery into the side of a hill, as was the practice in the days of 1856, and created thick stone foundation walls to make a brew cellar for keeping the beer fresh. We will tour this historic brewery and learn even more about the Badger Brewing Company and the Pioneer Brewing Company that led to the award winning Brewmaster Todd Krueger. His two gold awards at the 2000 World Beer Cup was followed by another gold award in 2002.
Dinner will be on our own at HoChunk Casino in Black River Falls. Choices include their café or buffet. For those that enjoy gaming, dinner can be taken to go.
As we return to Medford after wining the day away, we can continue our wine drinking or simply enjoy the company of friends and relax.
